Temitayo Igunnu in Police station

Battered young lawyer, Mr. Temitayo Igunnu has been moved to Bar Beach Police Station by military authorities.

Mr. Igunnu was today around Apongbon, Lagos battered by some soldiers attached to Bonny Camp while on his way to work.

Eye witnesses said the young lawyer was handcuffed and bundled to Bonny Camp for challenging a naval rating who broke his car mirror.

Following huge outcry against the maltreatment of the lawyer and fears over his life, the soldiers have now transferred him to Bar Beach Police Station in a move seen as an attempt to evade culpability for the assault.

Mr. Igunnu was denied access to medical care to treat his serious injuries.

Meanwhile, lawyers from both the NBA Lagos Branch leadership and its Human Rights Committee have besieged the Bar Beach Police Station to secure his release. NBA National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kunle Edun has also contacted the branch on the matter.

Many senior lawyers have condemned the assault, saying it is a throwback to the ignoble military era.

The young lawyer was driving to work this morning when his car mirror was destroyed by a commercial bus driven by a naval rating.

As he alighted and complained to the rating about the damage done to his car, some soldiers who were said to be passing by descended on him and battered him. They then handcuffed him and took him away in their vehicle to Bonny Camp.

A colleague, Hannah Alabi, who visited the young lawyer at Bonny Camp where he is being detained by the military authorities, said he has a swollen and serious bruises all over his body.

Pleas to allow him get urgent medical attention fell on deaf ears, as the soldiers insisted that he would not be released until the naval rating returned to the Camp.
