Retired Nigerian military personnel on Tuesday, January 9, 2025, barricaded the Ministry of Finance headquarters in Abuja, demanding the full payment of their long-overdue entitlements.

The retirees, who set up canopies and chairs at the ministry’s entrance, effectively blocked staff from driving into the premises, forcing many to park outside.

This demonstration follows a similar protest in December 2024, during which the retirees shut down the Ministry of Finance over the government’s failure to settle their financial claims.

Despite official approval for payment, the retirees say they are still owed a 20% to 28% salary increment covering January to November 2024.

Additionally, they are demanding:

  • Payment of palliatives covering October 2023 to November 2024.
  • An N32,000 monthly pension increment.
  • Bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance.
  • Refund of pension deductions from the salaries of medically boarded soldiers.

Following their December 2024 protest, the Federal Government reportedly paid 50% of the outstanding entitlements and promised to clear the remaining balance.

However, the retirees claim the government has failed to honor this commitment, prompting them to resume their protests.

The retirees’ blockade has caused significant disruption at the Ministry of Finance, with employees unable to access the building by vehicle. The protestors remain resolute, insisting they will not leave until their demands are fully met.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the Federal Government regarding the renewed protest or any plans to address the retirees’ grievances.

The situation remains tense, and observers are calling on the government to engage with the retirees and fulfill its obligations to prevent further escalation.
