The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has suspended its nationwide industrial action which commenced on June 2, 2025, following high-level negotiations with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Kudirat Motunmori Oba, GCON, and other key stakeholders.

The decision was announced in a communiqué issued on June 3, 2025, after a series of deliberations involving the CJN, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and various judicial leadership bodies.

JUSUN had embarked on the strike to protest the non-payment of five months’ wage award arrears, the non-implementation of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage, and the failure to effect the agreed 25/35% salary increase for judiciary workers. The strike disrupted court operations across the country, shutting down federal courts including the Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, and High Courts of the FCT, though the Supreme Court and some other judicial bodies remained functional, citing assurances from the CJN.

In the signed agreement, JUSUN agreed to suspend the strike in honour of the CJN’s intervention and to allow the federal government, through the facilitation of stakeholders, a one-month period to release necessary funds in line with the 2025 Appropriation Act.

Key Resolutions from the Agreement:

  • The CJN and other stakeholders will engage the federal government to ensure the release of statutory allocations to the judiciary within one month.
  • Upon receipt of the funds, immediate implementation of JUSUN’s demands will follow. These include the ₦70,000 minimum wage, the 25/35% salary adjustment, and the five-month wage award arrears.
  • JUSUN directed its members nationwide to resume work on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

The communiqué was endorsed by JUSUN’s National Vice President, Assistant Financial Secretary, and chairpersons of key judicial institutions including the Federal Judicial Service Commission, Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, National Judicial Institute, and the FCT Judicial bodies.

With the suspension of the strike, normal judicial activities are expected to resume nationwide, bringing relief to litigants and court users after several days of disruption.
