The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally directed social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to remove a post made by activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, warning that failure to comply could attract legal action.

In a letter dated August 26, 2025, and signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DSS Director General, the agency gave X Corp 24 hours to take down the controversial tweet, which was published on Sowore’s verified handle on August 25. The letter was addressed to the Chairman and CEO of X Corp.

The post accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of lying about the absence of corruption in his administration during a recent official visit to Brazil. The DSS described Sowore’s remarks as “misleading information, hate speech, incitement to violence, and a threat to national security,” arguing that the tweet violated the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, the Cybercrimes Act 2025, and other relevant laws.

According to the agency, Sowore’s post was deliberately intended to damage the President’s reputation and tarnish Nigeria’s international image, potentially provoking unrest among the President’s supporters. The DSS expressed concern that the tweet’s circulation could escalate political tension and trigger protests.

The letter also cited sections of Nigerian law prohibiting the publication of false information, spreading fake news, and engaging in online harassment or hate speech, noting that both the author and the platform could be held criminally liable. The agency further referenced the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, emphasizing that the post could constitute domestic terrorism.

The DSS warned X Corp that non-compliance would force the Federal Government to take “far-reaching, sweeping and across-the-board measures” against Sowore’s online activity.

The notice demanded the immediate removal of the tweet and any re-tweets, stressing that 24 hours was sufficient for compliance.
