The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday commissioned the state-of-the-art Wole Olanipekun Physiotherapy Centre (WOPC) at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Describing the facility as “a gift of true giving, a legacy built not for applause but for healing and hope,” Sanwo-Olu praised the initiative as a powerful example of altruism and commitment to societal well-being.

The physiotherapy centre, donated by Mr. Bode Olanipekun (SAN) and his wife, Tolu, stands as a tribute to legal icon and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN).

The facility was built to honour his lifelong dedication to law, education, service, and nation-building.

In his remarks as Special Guest of Honour, Governor Sanwo-Olu recounted how the project was kept secret from Chief Olanipekun until days before the unveiling. He applauded the spirit of anonymous giving, adding, “There is no better satisfaction than when you give back to society and the beneficiaries do not even know who gave it. That is the real essence of giving.”

Sanwo-Olu commended the Olanipekun family for investing in a sector crucial to Nigeria’s development, describing the centre not just as a building, but “a statement and a challenge” to others to give back in meaningful ways. He humorously added that the gesture had set him “on a race” to contribute more to the University of Lagos. Nigerian Airways merchandise

The idea for the centre was conceived in February 2024, and it has since grown into what many at the event hailed as the finest physiotherapy facility in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Professor W.L. Adeyemo, said the project had surpassed all expectations, adding: “When Bode and Tolu first brought the idea to us, we had no idea it would be this massive. Their insistence on quality delayed the project, but also elevated it.”

He described the centre as a landmark in LUTH’s push to become a 21st-century healthcare institution, equipped with world-class tools, patient-focused architecture, and advanced therapy technology.

Architect Jimi Adetona, the lead project consultant, provided a technical overview of the facility, highlighting its modern and inclusive design.

The three-storey building includes eight treatment cubicles, hydrotherapy pool, adult and paediatric gyms, VIP treatment rooms, intern and staff lounges, 60-seater seminar/training room, solar-powered backup system, and fire safety and universal accessibility features.

“This is more than concrete and steel. It is a vision realised, a symbol of collaboration at its best,” Adetona remarked.

In his remarks, donor Bode Olanipekun (SAN) expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his commitment and presence.

He said, “When I told him about the project, he said, ‘Bode, any day you pick, just let me know.’ No letter. No formality,” Bode shared, blessing the governor, “May your race never decline or decrease, sir.”

However, the emotional high point of the event came when Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) gave his remarks. He recalled how all his children became lawyers without pressure from him. “I never told any of them to read law. Perhaps they saw something in me and decided to follow.”

He lauded the project’s thoughtfulness and the positive impact it will have on countless lives: “I am honoured by this gesture. It is not just a building. It is a legacy of healing.”

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, expressed gratitude on behalf of the university community. “This is a game-changer. You haven’t just built a centre; you’ve written history,” she said, noting that the university was preparing for student population growth and upgrading facilities in line with federal goals.

In referencing gender inclusion and institutional excellence, she added: “And yes, I’m a ‘she’, running one of the biggest universities in Nigeria. So yes, the future is balanced.
