Former National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Nwosu, has alleged that he was offered three ministerial slots by senior government officials in a bid to dissuade him from transforming the ADC into a formidable opposition coalition platform. Nwosu made this revelation during an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Wednesday, shortly after the ADC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 29, where the party formally handed over leadership to former Senate President David Mark. Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, was also appointed as the party’s National Secretary.

Nwosu said the offers were made as part of a broader plan to weaken the ADC’s efforts to lead a coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

“They offered me three ministerial slots one for myself and two for others I would nominate,” Nwosu stated. “But I declined. I chose the democratic future of Nigeria. We fought to end military rule; Nigeria must not become a one-party state.”

According to him, the offer was a calculated move by elements within the APC to suppress credible opposition and consolidate political dominance. Nwosu made these comments at the NEC meeting, which was monitored by seven officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He further alleged that government-backed actors were actively working to destabilize the coalition initiative. Nwosu cited individuals such as Elias Adu and Alaku Godwin described as state chairmen of the party whom he accused of being lodged in high-end hotels and protected by security operatives to pursue legal action aimed at derailing the coalition. He added that some officials, like the Niger State chairman, withdrew from the alleged plot, citing coercion.

“These actions are being sponsored with public funds,” Nwosu claimed. “They reflect a pattern similar to the monopolistic politics we see in Lagos.”

In swift response, the Presidency denied Nwosu’s claims. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, dismissed the allegations as “false and baseless” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“No government official has the authority to offer ministerial appointments except the President,” Bwala stated. “If Nwosu is courageous enough to make such claims, he should also name those involved.” He mockingly referred to the ADC as an “Association of Disorganised Characters.”

The NEC meeting on July 29 marked the formal transformation of the ADC into a coalition platform, following its July 2 announcement. David Mark was officially named interim National Chairman, while the NEC dissolved the existing National Working Committee (NWC) and inaugurated a new National Caretaker Committee. The committee includes Bolaji Abdullahi as National Publicity Secretary, alongside six deputy chairmen representing each of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

The transition motion was moved by South-West zonal chairman Razzaq Eyiowuawi and seconded by Zamfara State chairman Kabiru Garba. The NEC also reinstated members expelled in 2022, with the exception of former presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu, who remains suspended over allegations that he accepted funds to sabotage the coalition project.

Nwosu reported a surge in ADC membership since the coalition’s formation, claiming over three million registrations within two weeks. He said the party now counts 28 senators and over 60 members of the House of Representatives among its ranks, positioning it as “the government in waiting.” The online registration portal, he said, crashed twice due to traffic and had to be migrated to Amazon servers. He also revealed that coalition member Babachir Lawal requested 2.5 million membership cards for the Northeast zone alone.

However, these claims have not been independently verified. Some observers, including X user @woye1, have expressed skepticism, citing internal resistance within the party. At least five state chairmen have reportedly filed lawsuits seeking to halt the coalition transition.

In his acceptance speech, David Mark described his appointment as “the dawn of a new chapter” for the ADC. He pledged to foster internal democracy, promote transparency, and enforce strict party discipline.

“We will ensure collective leadership, build a technically competent party bureaucracy, and implement a sustainable funding structure,” Mark said. He also promised to allocate 35% of leadership positions to women and ensure youth representation for individuals under 40. A 50-member Policy Committee is being constituted to revise the party manifesto, focusing on sectors like health, education, and security.

“ADC will articulate a clear ideological path and progressive policies,” he concluded. “We invite all Nigerians to join us in building a party that promotes unity, inclusion, and opportunity.”
