The United Kingdom is sending one of its Royal Navy warships, HMS Dragon, to the Middle East as part of preparations for a possible multinational mission to protect international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

A spokesperson for the UK Defence Ministry, quoted by the Press Association, said the warship would be moved into position ahead of any future operation aimed at securing the strategic waterway when conditions allow vessels to safely transit the strait.

“We can confirm that HMS Dragon will deploy to the Middle East to pre-position ahead of any future multinational mission to protect international shipping when conditions allow them to transit the Strait of Hormuz,” the spokesperson said.

According to the ministry, the move is part of “prudent planning” to ensure that the UK is ready to act alongside international partners, especially under a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France.

“The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the strait, when conditions allow,” the spokesperson added.

HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer, is being moved from the eastern Mediterranean, where it had been involved in defending British bases in Cyprus.

The redeployment comes amid continuing tension in the Middle East and concerns over the safety of commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil and global trade.

The warship is expected to remain in the region and stand ready to support efforts to safeguard shipping if hostilities cease between Iran and US-Israeli forces.

A fragile ceasefire is reportedly still in place, although tensions remain high following recent attacks. Reports said US forces on Friday struck two Iranian tankers that were allegedly attempting to breach a blockade imposed by President Donald Trump.

Trump has also said he expects a letter from Iran in response to Washington’s latest proposal for a deal aimed at ending the Middle East war.

The planned deployment of HMS Dragon signals the UK’s readiness to support a wider international security operation in the Gulf if the situation permits.
