The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, has affirmed the university’s resolve to stay focused on the ongoing investigation into sexual harassment allegations against a law faculty professor, despite recent controversies.

Addressing the media on Friday, Prof. Obi referenced the leaked audio of Women’s Affairs Minister Uju Kennedy allegedly intimidating student witnesses in the harassment case against Prof. Cyril Ndifon. While avoiding direct comment on the minister’s remarks, the VC maintained the students spoke out themselves against the suspended dean.

Obi insisted the prevailing atmosphere at UNICAL encourages students to report any exploitation or harassment. She commended the courage of female students whose testimony is key to tackling ingrained patriarchal oppression.

The VC acknowledged the importance of Minister Kennedy’s office but emphasized her own duty to serve Nigeria’s interests through this crucial probe. She vowed the university would remain objective and allow the panel to thoroughly investigate all factors raised in the students’ petition.

Obi outlined the panel’s composition, including observers from various agencies and groups to ensure impartiality. She noted they even permitted public viewing of livestreamed sessions.

According to the VC, despite these efforts at transparency, some individuals continue to politicize the matter and misportray the confrontation of impropriety as wrong. But she promised the university would not be distracted by any accusations or alternative narratives.

Obi reinforced her commitment to lifting UNICAL to greater heights, stating any successes would overwhelm the current noise. She expressed confidence the investigation’s outcome would benefit the university.

The VC’s strong stance indicates the university remains resolute on examining the sexual harassment claims against Prof. Ndifon amidst outside pressure. UNICAL emphasizes it will proceed fairly and intentionally, ignoring noise attempting to impede the ongoing probe.
