President Julius Bio of Sierra Leone delivered a thought-provoking lecture entitled “Navigating the Future: Democracy, Progressive Politics and Inclusive Development in Africa – The Sierra Leone Experience” at the University of Pennsylvania on March 25, 2024. The event, organized by the Centre for Africana Studies, featured a Q&A session with the Centre’s Director, Wale Adebanwi.
During the lecture, President Bio emphasized the need for reform within the United Nations Security Council, describing it as “obsolete” and “dysfunctional.” He argued that the current structure hinders the world’s ability to effectively address global challenges and called for serious reforms to create a better society.
When asked about his experience as a former military ruler who handed over power within three months, President Bio attributed his decision to his value system and commitment to democracy. Despite facing challenges and opposition, he remained true to his word and relinquished power as promised.
Addressing the recent military coups in West and Central Africa, President Bio stressed the importance of leadership in navigating difficult circumstances. He noted that the reasons behind these coups vary from country to country and highlighted the need for individual solutions. President Bio also criticized leaders who manipulate constitutions for personal gain, stating that such actions encourage military intervention and civilian support for coups.
Discussing his first term’s focus on education and gender equality, President Bio reported significant progress in Sierra Leone. His administration provided free primary and secondary education, along with support for women in STEM courses. The government also implemented measures to improve access to education, such as transportation, school meals, and the provision of textbooks and learning materials. These efforts have led to improved learning outcomes and increased enrollment in secondary schools and universities.
President Bio passionately advocated for women’s empowerment, drawing from his personal experience of being raised by his mother and sister. He believes that empowering women is crucial for accelerating global development and has taken legislative action to ensure women’s representation in appointed positions, the legislature, and the cabinet.
Looking ahead to his second term, President Bio announced the “Feed Sierra Leone” program, which aims to achieve food sovereignty by increasing domestic food production. The government is currently raising funds and implementing policies to support this initiative.
When questioned about the criticisms and allegations surrounding the June 2023 presidential election, President Bio expressed confidence in his victory and the progress made during his first term. He highlighted his administration’s achievements in reducing maternal mortality rates and Sierra Leone’s election to the UN Security Council.
President Bio attributed his success to his faith in God, the support of his mother and sister, and his strong work ethic. He also spoke fondly of actor Idris Elba, praising his love for Sierra Leone and his involvement in projects that help the poor.
In conclusion, President Bio’s lecture provided valuable insights into his leadership, the challenges faced by African nations, and the importance of education, women’s empowerment, and hard work in achieving inclusive development.
