The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has expressed readiness to support the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, with biometric verification technology as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between the two federal agencies.

The development followed a courtesy visit by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, and members of the Board’s management team to the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where JAMB sought access to biometric equipment that could help improve the integrity of its examination and verification processes.
According to Aina, JAMB approached INEC because of the electoral body’s considerable experience in deploying biometric technology for the identification and verification of large numbers of Nigerians.
He said the examination body was seeking to further strengthen the credibility of its processes and had learnt that INEC possessed biometric verification equipment that might no longer be in active use.
Aina therefore appealed to the Commission to consider making some of the equipment available to JAMB to support its efforts to improve biometric verification and reduce identity-related irregularities during examinations.
Responding, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, welcomed the delegation and described JAMB as a critical institution in Nigeria’s education system and the development of the country’s youth.
Amupitan said INEC’s recent electoral engagements had further demonstrated the Commission’s growing technological capacity, adding that the deployment of technology in recent elections had attracted commendations from stakeholders.
He consequently directed INEC’s Director of Information and Communications Technology to review JAMB’s request and carry out a proof-of-concept assessment to determine the availability, technical condition and suitability of biometric verification equipment that could potentially be deployed by the examination body.
The INEC Chairman said the engagement underscored the growing importance of inter-agency collaboration and the need for government institutions to share expertise and available resources where such cooperation could improve public service delivery.
He assured the JAMB delegation that the Commission remained willing to explore additional areas of cooperation that could strengthen the capacity of both institutions to discharge their statutory responsibilities.
Amupitan received the delegation alongside the National Commissioner in charge of Outreach and Partnerships, Prof. Abdullahi Abdu-Zuru; the Director of ICT, Dr. Lawrence Bayode; the Director of Human Resources Management, Umar M. Bashar; the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Victoria Eta-Messi; and the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola.
Aina, in his response, thanked the INEC Chairman and management for receiving the delegation and reaffirmed JAMB’s interest in strengthening institutional collaboration with the Commission.
The proposed support, if found technically suitable following INEC’s assessment, is expected to enhance JAMB’s biometric verification framework and further strengthen safeguards around candidate identification during its examination and admission processes.
