The Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) National Executive Committee (NEC) recently convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the fate of the 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC), originally scheduled to take place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

This urgent discussion follows the Federal Government’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State and the controversial suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The NBA has strongly condemned these actions as unconstitutional, warning that they pose a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic principles and the rule of law.

With the political crisis deepening, concerns have been raised over the ability to guarantee the safety of conference attendees. Will Port Harcourt remain a secure venue for such a high-profile gathering?

The NBA has consistently positioned itself as a defender of democracy and constitutional order. Would proceeding with the AGC in Rivers State be perceived as legitimizing an administration that has violated constitutional provisions?

Many lawyers have already made travel plans, booked accommodations, and registered for the AGC. If the venue is changed, how will the NBA handle refunds and alternative arrangements?

Would relocating the conference signal strength and independence, or would it be seen as succumbing to political instability?

🔘 Immediate Relocation – Move the conference to another city without further delay due to security concerns and to protest the unconstitutional suspension of elected officials.

🔘 Remain in Port Harcourt – Proceed with hosting the conference in Port Harcourt as originally planned, ensuring robust security measures and reinforcing the NBA’s commitment to free assembly despite political turmoil.

🔘 NBA Should Ensure Refunds/Compensation – If relocation happens, the NBA must provide full refunds or alternative compensation for lawyers who have already committed resources to attend.
