*Accuses Husband of Deception, Says He Had Kids With Another Woman Before Marriage

A policewoman, Angela Adams, on Tuesday pleaded with a Customary Court in Abuja to dissolve her marriage with her husband, Titus Adams, over alleged domestic violence.

In a divorce petition filed at the Jikwoyi court, Angela told the court that her husband constantly beats her over minor disagreements. She said he deliberately targets her eyes when beating her.

The policewoman recounted an incident where Titus punched her face but she blocked it with her hand, tearing her hand in the process. She was in tears as she narrated the violence she has endured.

Angela also accused her husband of deceiving her into marrying him when he already had two children with another woman and had recently impregnated someone else.

She informed the court that Titus took a N750,000 loan in her name from a microfinance bank but used it to rent and furnish an apartment for another woman rather than the claimed wood and zinc sheets.

The embattled policewoman pleaded with the court to grant her custody of their only child and dissolve the marriage before her husband kills her. She expressed fear over the child’s welfare if something happens to her.

However, Titus who is also a police officer was absent in court. The judge ordered that a hearing notice be served on him through his lawyer and adjourned proceedings to October 24th for the defendant to cross-examine the claims.

Domestic violence remains a pressing issue in Nigeria. Angela’s case highlights the plight of many victims suffering silently within marriage. Women rights groups have called for more enlightenment to encourage speaking out against abuse.
