The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong advisory to the Osun State Government to suspend the upcoming Local Government elections, citing credible intelligence reports of potential violence and security threats.

In a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the NPF warned that various political and interest groups are mobilizing to instigate unrest, disrupt public peace, and undermine the democratic process.

The police assessment of the security landscape indicates that proceeding with the elections under current conditions could escalate tensions, leading to widespread violence and endangering lives and property.

“Given the imminent threat to public safety, the Nigeria Police strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of national stability,” the statement read.

The Force further emphasized that while security agencies remain prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order, a preventive approach would be the best course of action to safeguard democracy and public peace.

Beyond security risks, the NPF also pointed to legal complexities surrounding the elections. The statement referenced a recent clarification from the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice regarding judicial pronouncements on Local Government administration in Osun State.

The Court of Appeal, in a ruling on February 10, 2025, overturned an earlier decision by the Federal High Court, raising questions about the legal foundation of the elections as currently planned.

The police urged all political stakeholders and citizens of Osun State to exercise restraint and prioritize peace during this period.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property, and upholding democratic principles in line with the law,” the statement concluded.
