Following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the nationwide resumption of Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) issuance, now fully automated and digitised to enhance transparency and public trust.

According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the move addresses growing complaints over harassment by security agents, especially concerning vehicles with factory-fitted tinted windows.

The new system, reactivated under the Police Specialised Services Automation Project (POSSAP), allows applicants to register and process permits via the portal www.possap.gov.ng, integrating identity verification using NIN, BVN, or TIN, along with biometric data and background checks.

“With modern automobiles increasingly manufactured with tinted windows, it has become essential to provide a standardised system that accommodates legitimate use while ensuring public safety,” Adejobi said.

Applicants will now receive QR-coded digital permits with a processing time of 72 hours, significantly improving efficiency. The Force has also announced a 30-day grace period, effective May 1, 2025, after which full enforcement will commence.

How to Apply for a Tinted Glass Permit:

  1. Visit www.possap.gov.ng and register using your NIN, BVN, or TIN.
  2. Complete the registration form and verify your account via email.
  3. Log in and select “Tinted Glass Permit” from the service options.
  4. Provide accurate vehicle details and upload required documents.
  5. Confirm and make payment online.
  6. Schedule an inspection and biometric capture at a designated NPF Intelligence Department location.

The police clarified that the reactivation of the permit system is a strategic effort to curb misuse of tinted vehicles, which are often associated with crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and “one-chance” scams.

Adejobi stressed that officers found engaging in extortion or unprofessional behaviour during enforcement would be severely sanctioned under existing disciplinary procedures.

The issuance of tinted glass permits was previously suspended in June 2021 by former IGP Usman Baba, amid concerns over abuse and criminal exploitation.
