Kunle Edun, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), strongly denounced the prosecution and detention of minors for treason, describing it as “shameful.” He called for disciplinary action against the lawyers and police officers involved in what he termed an “aberration.”
Edun expressed his disbelief that in more developed countries, the prosecuting counsel involved in such a case would face a professional disciplinary hearing and be required to provide evidence that the young boys charged in court are fathers and university graduates.
He emphasized that the legal profession does not need “shameless liars” and that despite clear evidence, a lawyer embarrassing the profession on television should be a serious concern for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
The senior advocate aligned himself with the views of the emeritus NBA President, Joseph Daudu, SAN, and advised the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to enter a nolle prosequi in the matter, allowing the children to return to their parents after being unlawfully detained for more than three months.
Edun also called for the Police Service Commission to issue queries to the police officers involved in this “global show of shame,” stating that they are not fit and proper persons to be in the force.
He stressed that the police ought to be a civil and humane institution, not a law-breaking one, and that they should focus on going after “arrogant and spoilt politicians who can make hardworking Nigerians disappear from the face of the earth.”
