The FCT Police Command has commenced investigations into the mysterious and sudden death of a 27-year-old woman, Miss Esther Akwaji, who died shortly after eating food provided by her boyfriend during a visit to his residence in the Dei-Dei area of Abuja.

The boyfriend, whose identity has not been disclosed, is currently at large as police intensify efforts to apprehend him.

Spokesperson of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed the incident in a statement, revealing that a distress call was received at the Dei-Dei ‘A’ Division on January 22, 2026, at about 11 a.m. from Mr. Peter Akwaji, who reported that his sister had gone missing.

According to the police spokesperson, Miss Esther Akwaji left home on January 21, 2026, at approximately 3 p.m., informing her family that she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei. However, she never returned home as expected.

“He further disclosed that at about 10:30 p.m. the same day, he received an anonymous telephone call from an individual who identified himself as the deceased’s boyfriend,” SP Adeh stated.

The caller, claiming to be Esther’s boyfriend, explained that the deceased had visited him at his residence, where he bought food for her. After consuming the meal, she began vomiting, according to the anonymous caller.

“He claimed that she was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead while receiving treatment,” the police spokesperson added.

Following the report, a team of police operatives from the Dei-Dei Division immediately swung into action and proceeded to Kubwa General Hospital, where the lifeless body of Miss Esther Akwaji was recovered.

The body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, a crucial step in establishing whether foul play was involved in the young woman’s sudden demise.

SP Adeh confirmed that discreet investigations have commenced, with efforts currently ongoing to trace and apprehend the alleged boyfriend, who is presently on the run.

The circumstances surrounding the boyfriend’s decision to make an anonymous call rather than staying with the deceased or properly reporting the incident to authorities have raised serious questions that investigators are working to answer.

The FCT Police Command has assured members of the public of its unwavering commitment to conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring that all persons found culpable are brought to justice.

“Further developments will be communicated as investigations progress,” the police spokesperson stated.

The case has sparked concerns about the safety of young women and the importance of family members knowing the whereabouts and contacts of their loved ones, particularly when visiting romantic partners.

The autopsy results are expected to provide crucial insights into whether the food consumed by the deceased was poisoned or if there were other underlying medical conditions that led to her sudden death. The outcome of the autopsy will likely determine the direction of the investigation and the charges that may be filed once the suspect is apprehended.
