The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of popular social media political commentator and government critic, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, who was attacked at his residence in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

Dan Shagamu, who operated under the name Dan-Shagamu International, was known for his social media videos and outspoken commentary on political, religious and community issues, including criticism of the Kano State and Federal Governments.
Police said the commentator was attacked on September 8, 2026, after suspected assailants allegedly forced their way into his residence and assaulted him with sharp objects.
The spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the police received a distress call at about 11:30 p.m. from the Commander of the Gaida Vigilante Group, who reported that unidentified hoodlums had gained entry into Dan Shagamu’s home and attacked him.
According to Kiyawa, officers from the Kumbotso Police Division immediately responded and rushed the victim to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead on arrival.
“Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the DPO, Kumbotso Police Division, in collaboration with operatives of the Command’s tactical units and community stakeholders, conducted an intelligence-driven operation which resulted in the arrest of two suspects linked to the incident,” Kiyawa said.
The police spokesman said the suspects remained in custody and were undergoing interrogation, while efforts were continuing to identify and arrest other persons who may have participated in the attack.
He added that investigators were taking statements and conducting forensic procedures aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the killing and determining a possible motive.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, expressed concern over the incident and sympathised with the family of the deceased, assuring residents that the investigation would be pursued to its conclusion.
“The Kano State Police Command will not relent in its mandate to protect lives and property. We assure the good people of Kano that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” Bakori said.
The command also commended the Gaida Vigilante Group for promptly alerting the police, describing the development as evidence of the importance of community participation in crime prevention.
Kiyawa urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency channels.
He said the two suspects would be charged to court after investigations were concluded.
Police have also intensified patrols and intelligence-gathering operations in Gaida and neighbouring areas in an effort to prevent further violence and maintain public order.
Before the police announcement, Amnesty International Nigeria had condemned Dan Shagamu’s killing and called for an immediate investigation.
The rights group said his body was found in a pool of blood at his residence and alleged that he had been “brutally slaughtered after being overpowered by his killers.”
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the killing of a social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu whose body was found today in a pool of blood at his home in Kano,” the organisation said.
It added: “The Nigerian authorities must investigate this incident and ensure that those suspected of responsibility are brought to justice.”
Amnesty International also expressed concern about what it described as increasing politically related threats and intimidation as elections approach.
“As the elections approach, we continue to receive disturbing reports of politically related threats to life and intimidation,” the organisation said.
Unverified accounts circulating on social media had earlier described the killing as particularly gruesome, with some using the Hausa expression “yankan rago,” commonly associated with throat-slitting. The precise nature of Dan Shagamu’s injuries and the motive for the attack remain matters under police investigation.
Reacting to the killing, Nigeria Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso said he was “deeply disturbed” by the death of the commentator and called for a thorough investigation.
Kwankwaso urged the Kano State Government to constitute an investigative panel to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that all those responsible were brought to justice.
He warned that failure by the authorities to conduct what he described as a decisive and transparent investigation could result in the matter being reopened by an NDC administration.
“Should the authorities fail to take decisive and transparent action, the incoming NDC Government will, upon assumption of office, launch a full investigation and take all necessary steps to hold those responsible accountable,” Kwankwaso said.
He also called on both the Kano State and Federal Governments to protect political commentators and opposition voices from threats, attacks and intimidation, stressing that freedom of expression is guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.
Kwankwaso extended condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends and followers and prayed that Almighty Allah grant the deceased Jannatul Firdaus.
With two suspects now in police custody, investigators are seeking to determine who carried out the attack, whether others were involved and what motivated the killing. Authorities have not yet publicly established any political connection to the murder.
