Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have reportedly arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State.

NLC Head of Information, Benson Upah, confirmed that heavily armed policemen picked up Ajaero at the state secretariat of the congress on Wednesday morning and took him to an unknown location.

The arrest comes just as the NLC was set to begin a total strike in Imo starting November 1 over disputes with the state government. The NLC has accused the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma of violating workers’ rights and neglecting their welfare.

On Sunday, Ajaero outlined infractions including 20 months of salary arrears, declaring workers as ghost workers, unpaid pensions and gratuities, and non-compliance with the national minimum wage. He said the state government has resisted using social dialogue to resolve the issues.

The planned NLC strike was aimed at pressing the demands of workers in the state who are owed months of salary and have faced various challenges. The police action indicates the state government is taking steps to foil the industrial action.

It remains unclear why Ajaero was specifically targeted for arrest as preparations were underway for full strike mobilization in Imo. The NLC is expected to call for his immediate release and continue plans for industrial action if the disputes are not resolved.
