The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has confirmed the arrest of a man accused of threatening, assaulting and intimidating a 28-year-old widow identified simply as Tosin amid an alleged attempt to dispossess her of property belonging to her late husband in Ikorodu.

The agency said it intervened after being alerted on Tuesday to a viral report alleging that the widow was being harassed by members of her late husband’s family following his death.
The case attracted widespread attention after human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared a video on his X account showing a man identified as Tosin’s father-in-law allegedly padlocking the gate of the property and preventing her from entering the house.
“Standing with young widow Tosin. This man here is Tosin’s father-in-law. See him padlocking the gate, locking Tosin outside,” Gwamnishu wrote while sharing the footage.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, the DSVA said it successfully contacted Tosin, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation since the death of her husband.
“The agency successfully established contact with the survivor, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation following the recent death of her husband,” the agency stated.
It added that the widow had already reported the matter to the Owutu Police Division before the agency’s intervention.
The DSVA said it subsequently contacted the police officers handling the case and received confirmation that the alleged perpetrator had been arrested.
“Preliminary feedback from the police confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue,” it said.
The agency assured Tosin and her children of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting their safety and rights, adding that it would continue working with the police and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice was served.
It also commended members of the public and partner organisations for reporting cases of domestic and sexual violence, noting that timely reports strengthen the state’s response to gender-based violence and other forms of abuse.
The agency urged residents to report cases of domestic and sexual violence through its toll-free hotline, 0-8000-333-333, or its official social media platforms, @lagosdsva.
Reacting to the arrest, Gwamnishu thanked the Lagos State Police Command and the DSVA for their intervention and demanded that those allegedly occupying the property be removed to enable the widow to mourn her husband peacefully.
“The father-in-law was arrested in the early hours of today and is currently in police custody,” he wrote.
“Our first demand: Move them out of the house so Tosin can mourn her late husband in peace. Our client is the legally married wife of the deceased and has lawful rights over her late husband’s estate.”
The activist also said any property allegedly sold or taken without lawful authority would be pursued and recovered through legal proceedings.
“Any property illegally sold or taken by the father-in-law or any other person will be pursued and recovered through the law,” he stated.
“There is no sentiment in law. Justice must prevail, and the rights of the widow and her children must be protected.”
The allegations concerning ownership of the property, physical assault and threats have not yet been determined by a court, while police investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
