The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent renaming of streets in several local government areas, describing the move as unconstitutional and divisive.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Hakeem Olalemi, PDP Vice Chairman for Lagos Central, urged the ruling party to reconsider the renaming exercise, warning that it risks undermining the state’s unity and cosmopolitan identity.

Olalemi criticized the action, saying it appeared targeted at a particular section of society and cautioned against erasing historical names tied to ethnic groups that have contributed significantly to Lagos’ development.

“The Lagos PDP is hereby rejecting in totality the renaming of streets by some council chairmen. We should not erase history because of politics. It is against the spirit of unity in diversity and it will certainly affect the image of the state as a cosmopolitan state,” Olalemi said.

He further noted that most of the streets affected bore Igbo names, raising concerns among non-indigenous residents about the motives behind the changes.

The PDP leader described the street renaming as “totally unconstitutional” and blamed some local council executives for failing to consult widely before implementing the changes.

He warned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to revert the street names to their original status or face legal action to protect Lagos’ diverse heritage.

“We cannot erase history in the name of politics. The ruling party should know that this renaming of streets arbitrarily can lead to riot, unrest and serious chaos if care is not taken,” Olalemi said.

The recent renaming has also sparked protests, including one by residents of Ilaje community in Bariga Local Council Development Area, who rejected the change of ‘Ilaje Road’ to ‘King Sunny Ade Road.’

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has also criticized the renaming, describing it as unconstitutional.
