The internal power struggle within the Peoples Democratic Party took a dramatic turn Wednesday night as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, declared that his faction remains firmly in control of the party’s machinery, while the rival Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee signaled openness to reconciliation but with strict conditions.

The developments came on the heels of a Court of Appeal ruling from the Ibadan Division that affirmed the current caretaker leadership structure and advised all feuding parties to explore reconciliation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the 106th National Executive Committee meeting organized by the Abdulrahman Mohammed faction in Abuja, Wike made it clear that while his camp welcomes peace talks, it would only engage from a position of strength. He dismissed any suggestion of forming a new caretaker committee to appease aggrieved members, insisting that preparations for the party’s National Convention are already finalized.

The minister also fired a direct shot at Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, accusing certain individuals of negotiating secretly while publicly posturing for peace. He challenged rivals to present concrete proposals for reconciliation rather than engage in what he described as clandestine maneuvering.

Wike further dismissed long-standing accusations that his role in the APC-led administration made him a destabilizing force within the PDP, pointing out that those who once accused him have since defected to the APC while he remains in the party.

On the other side, the Turaki-led faction expressed willingness to respect advisories from both the Court of Appeal and the party’s Board of Trustees urging reconciliation. However, spokesman Ini Ememobong made clear that any peace process must strengthen the PDP rather than compromise its independence as the nation’s main opposition party.

Senate Minority Leader Moro attempted to strike a conciliatory tone, revealing that he had met with the Turaki faction earlier in the day to seek common ground. He urged all members to prioritize the party’s survival over personal ambitions.

House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda described Monday’s court ruling as a lifeline for the party and predicted that the judgment would trigger a wave of defections back to the PDP in the House of Representatives.

The NEC meeting was attended by prominent party figures including former governors Samuel Ortom and Ifeanyi Ikpeazu, Caretaker Committee Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, and Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, among others.

As the 2027 elections draw closer and INEC’s timetable tightens, the PDP faces mounting pressure to resolve its leadership crisis or risk going into the next electoral cycle deeply divided.
