Rabiu Kwankwaso, the influential Kano political leader and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has sharply criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over what he described as a disproportionate focus on developing the southern region of Nigeria, to the neglect of the North.
Speaking on Thursday at the Kano State Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment, Kwankwaso alleged that “most of the national budget is now tilting in one direction in this country,” referring to the South, where President Tinubu hails from.
“Let me advise the Federal Government on the distribution of federal resources,” he said. “Some of the issues we face here, including insecurity and poverty, stem largely from a lack of adequate resources and mismanagement of what little we get. It is happening here mainly, but like a desert, it could spread everywhere.”
Kwankwaso lamented the deplorable state of many roads in the North, citing his recent difficult journey by road from Abuja to Kano due to bad infrastructure, contrasting this with the large budgetary allocations reportedly dedicated to southern infrastructure projects.
“Yesterday, I was to come by air, but my flight was delayed, so I had to travel by road. The road from Abuja to Kaduna to Kano was a hell—terrible and very bad. This road project started many years ago, right from the beginning of the APC’s leadership,” he said.
He added, “We support infrastructure development anywhere in Nigeria that benefits the masses, but it’s not right for the government to take resources from one part of the country and dump it in another.”
Kwankwaso called on the Tinubu administration to change course and ensure fair and balanced distribution of resources to foster development across all regions.
“This is the time for the government to convince Nigerians that it is not just focused on one side of the country,” he stressed.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Kwankwaso remains a key political figure. His political group, Kwankwasiyya, commands a strong following in Kano and northern Nigeria. He has attracted interest from multiple parties including the APC, PDP, Labour Party, and ADC, as politicians seek alliances ahead of the next presidential race.
In the 2023 election, Kwankwaso won 38 of Kano’s 44 local government areas, securing nearly one million votes in the state, outpacing President Tinubu’s tally there.
