Abimbola Owoade has officially been crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, marking the beginning of a new era for the ancient kingdom. The coronation ceremony, held on Saturday in Oyo, followed nearly three years after the passing of the 45th Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, on April 22, 2022.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, among others. The coronation, which took place at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo, was a spectacle of tradition and cultural pride, underscoring Oyo’s prominent place in Yoruba history.

Governor Makinde, who had earlier presented Oba Owoade with the staff and instrument of office on January 13, 2025, expressed his administration’s commitment to ensuring due process in the selection of traditional rulers. He lauded the new Alaafin as a symbol of Oyo’s resilience and unity, emphasizing that the people of Oyo had patiently awaited the right leader, as chosen by the Oracle and the people.

Makinde further stated, “Some came to me asking for influence over the selection process, but the Oracle had already spoken. Today, we celebrate the rightful choice of Oba Owoade, who now embodies the hopes and dreams of the Oyo people.”

The Governor also reiterated his administration’s dedication to supporting traditional institutions, while ensuring that no undue interference disrupts the process of leadership selection. He called on all to support the new monarch and urged those challenging the coronation in court to accept the decision as divinely ordained and supported by the people.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade expressed profound gratitude to Governor Makinde for his support and to the people of Oyo for their trust. He urged unity and collaboration among the residents of Oyo Kingdom to foster progress and growth, ensuring that the kingdom thrives in both cultural heritage and economic development.

The event saw representation from several high-ranking officials and royal fathers from across Nigeria, including the Sultan of Sokoto, the Oluwo of Iwo, and the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom. The presence of these dignitaries added to the significance of the occasion, highlighting the importance of the Alaafin of Oyo within the broader context of Yoruba and Nigerian culture.

Also in attendance were members of the diplomatic community, including ambassadors from Portugal, Cuba, Brazil, and Spain to Nigeria, as well as leaders from various sectors including the military, industry, and government.

Governor Makinde concluded his speech by calling for continued collaboration between the government and traditional institutions to promote tourism, cultural heritage, and economic growth in Oyo State. He expressed confidence that the reign of Oba Owoade would usher in a period of prosperity for Oyo Kingdom and the entire state.
