“Inaugural Lecture To Explore ‘Banking Regulation and Nigeria’s Prosperity'”

Olabisi Onabanjo University will host its 111th Inaugural Lecture titled “Banking Regulation and Nigeria’s Prosperity: Unending Voyage, Definite Destination.” The highly anticipated lecture is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 8th August 2023, at the prestigious Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) Hall, Main Campus, Ago-Iwoye, at 2:00 p.m.

The Inaugural Lecture will be under the chairmanship of the University’s indefatigable Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Johnson Agboola.

Esteemed Professor Olusesan Mujaid Oliyide to Deliver a Compelling Address

The distinguished Inaugural Lecturer is none other than Professor Olusesan Mujaid Oliyide, an esteemed Professor of Law, whose expertise is expected to significantly contribute to the field of legal education.

Celebrating Prof. Olusesan Mujaid Oliyide: A Journey of Excellence

Born on October 23, 1963, in the illustrious rice town of Ofada, near Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Oliyide’s educational journey began with his primary education at Lisabi Primary School, Ijoko, Abeokuta, and Saint Paul’s Demonstration Primary School, Onikolobo, Abeokuta. He proceeded to Baptist Boys’ High School, Abeokuta, where he completed his secondary education before attending the Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic) Abeokuta, for his General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level). His unwavering pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Lagos, where he obtained his Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree in 1988, and subsequently, he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989, achieving Second Class (Upper) Division in the Nigerian Bar (Final) examinations.

After his NYSC assignment in Lagos State in 1990, he returned to the University of Lagos for his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree, which he earned in 1991, further enriching his legal expertise.

A Career Paved with Experience and Excellence

Before joining faculty of Olabisi Onabanjo University (then Ogun State University) in 1998 as an Assistant Lecturer, Professor Oliyide garnered diverse and valuable experiences in corporate organizations. He worked as Counsel, Senior Research Officer, and Senior Counsel in reputable law firms such as Oditah, Adebiyi, and Co., Toma Micro Publishers Limited, and Olaniwun Ajayi and Co., respectively. He also served as an Assistant Manager in the Corporate Finance Department of First City Monument Bank Limited (now FCMB Pic) until 1996 when he took a bold step to establish his own law firm – Olusesan Oliyide and Co., Lagos. Through dedication and a commitment to excellence, Prof. Oliyide steadily climbed the academic ladder, achieving the prestigious title of Professor of Law on October 1, 2012.

Contributions to Education and Research

With over 23 years of teaching and research experience at the University, Professor Oliyide made significant contributions to both undergraduate and postgraduate education. He successfully supervised about 200 undergraduate long essays, over nineteen (19) Masters (LL.M.) dissertations, one Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) dissertation, and four (4) Ph.D. theses. He also oversaw five other doctoral (Ph.D.) theses that were nearing completion. In addition to his academic prowess, Prof. Oliyide published over 45 papers in peer-reviewed Journals at national and international levels, authored eight (8) books, and contributed to over twenty (20) books and several published conference proceedings. His exceptional research earned him recognition and accolades within and beyond the University.

A Trailblazer in Academic Leadership

The inaugural lecturer’s meritorious service to Olabisi Onabanjo University extended beyond teaching and research. He held various esteemed positions within the University, including Head of Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Editor-in-Chief of The Nigerian Journal of Private and Commercial Law, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University Orator, Chairman of several committees, and distinguished member of the University Senate.

A Global Vision for Education

Professor Oliyide’s contributions to educational development also extended nationally and internationally. He served as an external examiner for numerous universities, including the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Crescent University, Abeokuta, and Babcock University, Ilishan. He also served as an assessor and examiner for esteemed professional bodies such as Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and Consultant for Greyhouse International Professional Resources Development Project. Moreover, He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitration (NICARB) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). Prof. Oliyide’s commitment to the development of legal education was further demonstrated by his membership in the Council of Legal Education of Nigeria, Editorial Board of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (Lagos Branch Journal), and the 60th Anniversary Planning Committee of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
