Dr. George Nweke, the immediate past Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, has doubled down on his explosive allegations against suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, asserting readiness to provide sensitive evidence to security agencies while urging the federal government to launch an independent investigation into the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly and widespread corruption under Fubara’s tenure.

In a gripping press conference in Abuja, Dr. George Nweke, who resigned voluntarily last week, addressed the nation a day after his initial bombshell claims, refuting suggestions of coercion and dismissing a viral video of his wife, Florence, alleging he was kidnapped. “I was not kidnapped.

I flew from Port Harcourt to Abuja with Arik Air. No kidnapper can carry me on a flight,” Nweke declared, apologizing for his wife’s statements, which he attributed to misinformation and intimidation by unnamed parties hunting for him. “As head of my family, I sincerely apologize to the public on her behalf. They went and frightened her.”

Nweke, a career civil servant with over three decades of service, sharply criticized Fubara’s response to his earlier accusations—particularly the governor’s failure to deny orchestrating the October 2023 arson of the State House of Assembly complex. “I was surprised he never debunked my allegations of bringing down the Assembly, which was the main subject matter,” Nweke said.

“Over one year, and no panel of inquiry was set up, no report from the state government, not even a police investigation.” He called on President Bola Tinubu and federal authorities to establish an independent probe, warning, “The truth is known on the lips of every person on the streets of Port Harcourt.”

Reiterating his insider perspective, Nweke stood firm on claims that Fubara personally confided plans to destabilize Rivers and Nigeria, including a scheme to influence the 2027 presidential election via Ijaw dominance over oil pipelines.

“I never said I was in a meeting with him and Bala Mohammed. Everything I said was what he told me personally, one-on-one,” he clarified, dismissing Fubara’s rebuttal as “feeble denial.” Nweke pledged to reserve “more sensitive” evidence—beyond what he’s shared publicly—for security agencies, citing the “mindboggling” theft of public funds and assets in the last two years, a period he said coincided with Rivers’ highest-ever federal allocations.

The former HoS framed his revelations as a patriotic duty, not political maneuvering. “I’m not a politician. I’m a career civil servant,” he said, tracing his journey from a lecturer in 1995 to director in 2004, and HoS in 2023 under Fubara’s appointment.

“This state that gave me the opportunity to grow from level zero to the enviable position of Head of Service cannot be brought down this way. It makes me cry.” He rejected accusations of being compromised, questioning, “If I could be compromised, it should have been by the governor who appointed me. I never compromised while in the system—why now that I’ve left?”

Nweke expressed personal outrage at the harassment of his wife, Florence, who was filmed in distress after his initial briefing. “Why go to harass my wife instead of calling me for a reaction? This is so personal to me because they brought her public disgrace,” he said, revealing he’d instructed her to join him in a “secure place” soon after his engagements in Abuja. He lauded her pride in his “extreme sacrifice for society, justice, and good governance,” despite the stress she endured.

Appealing to Rivers citizens and politicians, Nweke urged, “Don’t destroy our state for peanuts. Condemn what is bad. Bringing down a parliament is evil. Targeting national assets for destruction is evil. Whipping up tribal sentiment is evil.”

He warned that Fubara and his “infantile cohorts” have heavily invested in the state’s ruin, pleading with Tinubu and security agencies, “Don’t sweep this under the carpet. Come and save Rivers State from destruction.” Nweke hinted this might be his final public address, citing financial constraints, but vowed to cooperate fully with authorities. “When the security agencies invite me, I’ll make more disclosures. Some things are better said there than in the media.”
