The Federal Government has announced a 30-day emergency timeline to complete repairs on the damaged Keffi flyover in Nasarawa State following the collapse of one of its beams caused by a collision with an overloaded truck.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, who led a team of engineers on an inspection tour of the site on Sunday, disclosed that the incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, 2025, when a trailer transporting an excavator struck the flyover.

A statement signed by the Ministry’s Director, Press and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed, said the impact dislodged one beam and significantly damaged two others. The incident led to the untimely death of two persons, and two others were seriously injured.

Following an initial assessment by officials from the ministry, including the Permanent Secretary, Olufunso Adebiyi, and top engineers, a section of the bridge was immediately closed to traffic to forestall further damage and ensure public safety.

The statement read, “The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has inspected the damaged flyover at Keffi caused by an overburdened truck carrying an excavator.

The impact of the collision completely dislodged one of the beams and damaged two others. The on-the-spot assessment was undertaken today, Sunday, July 20th, 2025.

“One beam has completely fallen and damaged the walkway and parapet. Two other beams are still intact but visibly affected. As a precautionary measure, the overpass remains closed, although the underpass has been cleared.”

The minister said he had directed CGC Nigeria Limited, the contractor currently working on federal road projects within the FCT, to immediately begin redesigning and moulding a new beam to replace the collapsed one.

The repair process, he noted, is expected to span approximately 30 days, after which a structural integrity test will be conducted before reinstalling the beam.

“The process is expected to take approximately 30 days, after which a strength test will be conducted before reinstallation.

“The Federal Government is treating this as an emergency. We are sourcing funds through an intervention window while we await full releases. President Bola Tinubu has been briefed and has given a directive for immediate remedial work,” he stated.

He further expressed his condolences to the families of victims who may have suffered injuries or fatalities from the incident, assuring them of the government’s commitment to preventing a recurrence.

The minister was accompanied by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed; Deputy Director of Design and Bridges, Musa Seidu; and Federal Controller of Works in the FCT, Yakubu Usman, among others.

The Keffi flyover forms part of a critical transport corridor connecting the Federal Capital Territory to Nasarawa and other parts of the North-Central region. The ministry assured that it would work closely with the contractor and stakeholders to ensure a swift and safe reconstruction process.
