In a recent interview with Vanguard’s Law and Human Rights, the Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, addressed several pressing legal issues facing the nation.

Regarding the recent prison escapes in Maiduguri and Suleja due to severe flooding, Dr. Ajulo emphasized the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and response strategies in correctional facilities. He advocated for the fortification of infrastructure, improved emergency response plans, and increased collaboration between local governments, disaster management agencies, and correctional services.

On the topic of the stringent bail conditions given to #EndBadGovernance protesters, Dr. Ajulo explained that the court exercises its discretionary power to grant bail based on the accused’s likelihood to appear for trial and the severity of the alleged offenses. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the charges are legitimate and not a means to silence dissent.

Commenting on the Federal Government’s plan to block presidential pardons for convicted corrupt politicians, Dr. Ajulo acknowledged the laudable intention but raised concerns about selective justice. He argued that if certain crimes can receive pardons, the same standards should be applied universally. He emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms to tackle corruption and ensure fairness in the judicial system.

Lastly, Dr. Ajulo addressed the controversy surrounding the swearing-in of Justice Kekere-Ekun as acting Chief Justice of Nigeria before Senate confirmation. He clarified that the President’s action is constitutionally sound and essential for the uninterrupted continuity of judicial leadership. He dismissed claims of illegality, citing the relevant constitutional provisions and the temporary nature of the acting appointment.

Dr. Ajulo called for thoughtful and precise engagement with the legal framework, urging public figures to ensure their statements reflect a comprehensive grasp of the legal principles at hand.
