Nyada Auta, a candidate for the position of National Welfare Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has pledged to prioritize the implementation of the association’s existing workplace sexual harassment policy if elected. Auta, who is currently a member of the NBA’s National Welfare Committee, emphasized the importance of addressing this critical issue within the legal profession.

The NBA, the largest bar association on the African continent, has long been a beacon of the legal profession. However, the absence of effective enforcement of a comprehensive national policy addressing workplace sexual harassment has been a significant concern. Auta, along with other members of the National Welfare Committee, drafted a white paper outlining a proposed workplace sexual harassment policy, which was approved by the NBA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) under the Olumide Apkata regime.

“As a member of the team that contributed to this painstaking endeavor, I can attest to the depth of thought and care that has gone into its formulation,” Auta stated. “This policy aims to provide a robust framework for identifying, reporting, and resolving instances of sexual harassment within the NBA’s own ranks. Crucially, it also mandates targeted training and awareness-raising measures to ensure that all members and employees are equipped to recognize and address this pervasive issue.”

Auta emphasized that if elected as the National Welfare Secretary, his first order of business would be to present the NBA President with a clear and achievable pathway to implement the policy more effectively. He believes that by setting a strong precedent with its own policy, the NBA can inspire other legal institutions and workplaces across the country to follow suit, catalyzing a nationwide transformation in workplace culture and practices.

“Part of what I intend to achieve if elected is to contribute in ensuring that our association demonstrates its unwavering commitment to fostering safe, inclusive, and respectful environments for all those who contribute to the noble pursuit of justice,” Auta said. “In doing so, the NBA can cement its position as a true champion of the legal profession, and a beacon of progress for the nation as a whole.”

The NBA’s commitment to addressing workplace sexual harassment is a crucial step in promoting a safe and inclusive environment within the legal profession. Auta’s pledge to prioritize the implementation of the existing policy has garnered support from members of the association who believe in the importance of addressing this critical issue.
