Aviation workers have suspended their indefinite strike, which was scheduled to begin today, postponing the action until August 31 to allow negotiations with the Federal Government.
Speaking to newsmen, Ocheme Aba, a union leader, stressed that the suspension is not a permanent resolution but an outcome of planned talks during which workers will insist on all demands being met, warning that they are not prepared to compromise on long-standing grievances.
In a statement via his official X account on Sunday night, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, welcomed the decision, commending the unions for “shelving the planned strike” and noting that his longstanding relationship with labour leaders helped create room for dialogue. He expressed optimism that the sector’s lingering issues, which predate his tenure, would soon be resolved.
The strike threat had been jointly issued on August 8, 2025, by the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees.
The unions cited prolonged delays in securing improved remuneration and had planned to commence the industrial action on Monday, August 11, 2025.
