Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Thursday acknowledged the forcible removal of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) from her immigration press conference in Los Angeles, suggesting the incident was caused by Padilla’s own conduct.

“When I leave here I’ll have a conversation with him but I think everyone would agree that wasn’t appropriate,” Noem said at the start of the event, referring to Padilla’s interruption.

She added, “If you wanted to have a civil discussion, especially as a leader, a public official, you would reach out and try to have a conversation.”

Noem also criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, saying he has ignored her attempts to make contact. “I have left voicemails for Gov. Newsom wanting to have a conversation. Has he returned them? No, he hasn’t,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) sharply condemned the treatment of Padilla, who was ejected from the venue by security personnel after trying to ask Noem questions.

“I just saw something that sickened my stomach: the manhandling of a United States Senator,” Schumer said in a speech on the Senate floor. “We need immediate answers to what the hell went on.”

Schumer also posted a video of the incident on his X page, showing Padilla identifying himself and being pushed out of the room while shouting, “Hands off!”
