The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to the criticisms, which trailed the conduct of the 2019 general election.

Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at the strategic committee meeting on the post-2019 general election yesterday, said criticism is the basis for making any system work, adding that no democracy or electoral process is perfect.

“Every democracy is work in progress.

“Where we should to be criticised, I consistently say that friends will criticise you, but your enemies will condemn you,” he stated.

Yakubu, who praised the role of electoral officers (EOs) in the conduct of elections, noted that anyone who is familiar with elections knows that the electoral officers at local government levels play critical roles.

According to him, election activities are heavily dependent on the electoral officers.

“Anything that anybody is going to say about the conduct of elections in Nigeria is secondary to the kind of information we are going to hear from those who truly conduct elections that matter at the level of the PUs (polling units).

“The most important level of election on Election Day is actually the PUs, anything that happens thereafter is the movement of results and collation.”

National Commissioner in charge of Planning, Monitoring and Strategy Committee, Dr. Mohammed Lecky, said the just concluded 2019 elections, would not be deemed to have been completely concluded until a report is submitted, validated and published as part of INEC’s accountability to Nigerians.
