As Nigeria grapples with various economic challenges, an uproar has erupted following reports that each of the 109 serving senators received a N2 million allowance before embarking on a seven-week vacation.

The revelation has ignited widespread criticism as Nigerians question the timing and necessity of such an allowance amidst the country’s economic struggles.
A senator who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed that all senators were paid the allowance for the vacation period, which began on Monday and will continue until September 26.
Calculations indicate that the senators collectively received a total of N218 million, with each senator receiving N2 million.
Bank alerts for the allowance were reportedly sent to the senators on August 8, just before Senate President Godswill Akpabio publicly announced it. The announcement sparked controversy and a swift response from both the public and the Senate President’s colleagues.
Despite the announcement, there is uncertainty regarding whether the presiding officers, including the Senate President and Deputy Senate President, also received the N2 million allowance. This is due to differences in the salary and allowance structures outlined by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
The N2 million allowance has drawn attention to its legality, as it is not provided for in the remuneration package approved by the RMAFC, the authorized body responsible for establishing salaries and allowances for public servants.
Critics argue that given the challenging economic circumstances facing Nigerians, this allowance allocation appears tone-deaf and out of touch. The controversy has raised questions about the Nigerian government’s priorities, especially in light of the N228.1 billion allocated to the National Assembly in the 2023 budget, which itself attracted significant scrutiny.
The public outcry over this allowance adds to previous controversies surrounding the Senate President’s statements and actions. Nigerians have expressed concerns about the ability of the Senate to address pressing national issues and contribute to the country’s economic development.
As the debate continues, Nigerians are seeking accountability and transparency in government actions, especially during times of economic hardship and uncertainty.
