As Nigeria celebrates its 63rd Independence anniversary, organized labor, through the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has called on citizens, irrespective of their differences, to join a nationwide strike scheduled to begin on October 3.

Labor leaders believe this strike is a march towards achieving freedom, improved living conditions, and prosperity for all Nigerians.

In an independent anniversary message titled “Nigeria: ‘The Travails of a Mismanaged Giant’,” NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, emphasized that the struggle starting on October 3 is aimed at revitalizing Nigeria as a beacon of hope and prosperity. Despite its challenges, Nigeria possesses the potential to become one of the world’s leading economies.

Ajaero urged Nigerians to mark Independence Day with a renewed sense of purpose, acknowledging past difficulties and advocating for a brighter future. He called on all Nigerians to join the indefinite nationwide strike, which is intended to start the journey toward freedom and prosperity.

The NLC emphasized the need for unity across Nigeria’s diverse regions, stating, “To this end, the Nigeria Labour Congress beckons on all of us to join hands from all parts of the nation; the North, the East, the West and the South to build the needed coalition to make our nation truly an independent nation.”

The labor leaders highlighted several key issues, including:

  1. Economic Mismanagement: They pointed out the mismanagement of resources that has hindered Nigeria’s progress and led to it becoming the “poverty capital of the world.” The recent hike in petrol (PMS) prices was also mentioned as a contributor to increased hardship.
  2. Dilapidated Infrastructure: Labor leaders questioned why Nigeria, once prosperous, no longer has a national airline or a national shipping line. They discussed the deterioration of infrastructure and the loss of key national assets.
  3. Currency Devaluation: They called for an explanation of the continued devaluation of the Naira, despite rising crude oil revenues, and questioned the existence of a genuine foreign exchange market.
  4. Privatization Concerns: Labor leaders expressed concerns about the privatization of state-owned entities, such as power generation and distribution companies (GENCOs and DISCOs), and the lack of transparency in these transactions.
  5. Education and Healthcare: The leaders inquired about the rising costs of education and healthcare in Nigeria, making it unaffordable for many citizens. They discussed the decline in the quality of public universities and healthcare facilities.
  6. Security Challenges: Labor leaders raised questions about Nigeria’s ability to address security challenges effectively, particularly in combating Boko Haram insurgency.
  7. Economic Disparities: They highlighted the increasing wealth gap between the privileged few and the marginalized majority, affecting access to healthcare, education, and basic infrastructure.

In response to the strike call, the Federal Government is expected to meet with labor leaders on October 1, in an attempt to find common ground and avert the planned nationwide strike set to begin on October 3. Previous attempts to resolve the dispute had failed due to scheduling conflicts.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja at 12 noon. Labor leaders are hopeful that the dialogue will yield solutions to the economic and social issues plaguing Nigeria.
