Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain resolute in its efforts to stabilise and reposition the party, assuring its leaders that the challenges confronting the opposition are “not beyond repair.”

Obasanjo made the remarks on Saturday when members of the PDP NWC, led by the party’s National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

According to a statement shared on the party’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, the former president commended the steps taken so far by the current PDP leadership to address internal crises and urged them to press on with discipline and unity. He stressed that party members must strictly adhere to established rules and regulations if the PDP is to regain strength and credibility.

“Things are not beyond repair. Soldier on. You are doing very well,” Obasanjo told the delegation, encouraging the NWC to continue its work with diligence, tact and a sense of national responsibility.

He underscored the importance of a strong and focused opposition in a democratic system, charging the PDP leadership to ensure that the interest of Nigeria remains paramount. Obasanjo also expressed concern about the direction of the Federal Government, insisting that the country needs constructive political engagement from all actors to move forward.

The former president further pledged his readiness to offer guidance and share his wealth of political experience whenever the party’s leadership deems it necessary, noting that Nigeria’s current challenges demand maturity and patriotism from political leaders.

Responding on behalf of the NWC, Turaki expressed deep appreciation for Obasanjo’s counsel and encouragement. “Your continued support and wisdom mean a great deal to us, Sir,” he said. “Your advice and counsel are invaluable as we work tirelessly to rebuild, stabilise and unify our party. We came to tap into your experience and benefit from your perspective on the future of the PDP and the state of the nation.”

The PDP delegation included former Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu, Deputy National Chairman Taofeek Arapaja, former Plateau State governor Jonah Jang, and Ambassador Folake Marcus-Bello, among others. They were received by the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, before proceeding into a closed-door meeting with Obasanjo.

Although the exact details of the discussions were not disclosed, the visit comes amid deepening internal tensions within the PDP and a wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party has recently lost several high-profile members, fuelling concerns about its cohesion and electoral fortunes ahead of upcoming elections.
