The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has said ongoing reforms in the judiciary require the support and cooperation of lawyers to succeed and make meaningful impact on the justice system.

Justice Kekere-Ekun stated this while receiving a farewell delegation from the outgoing leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association at her office in the Supreme Court complex.

According to a statement issued by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Tobi Soniyi, the CJN stressed that the success of judicial reforms depends on sustained partnership between the Bench and the Bar.

She said both judges and lawyers share a common responsibility to promote efficient justice administration, strengthen public confidence in the courts and uphold the rule of law.

The CJN commended the outgoing NBA leadership for maintaining a cordial relationship and constructive engagement with the judiciary during its tenure.

She specifically thanked the Association for supporting the newly inaugurated Nigerian Case Management System at the Supreme Court.

Justice Kekere-Ekun assured the delegation that the apex court would continue to improve the electronic filing platform based on the practical experiences and feedback of lawyers and other court users.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, pledged the Bar’s support for the successful rollout of the NCMS and the recently issued Supreme Court (Mandatory Upload of Electronic Copies of Processes, Records of Appeal and Other Matters) Practice Directions, 2026.

Osigwe described the electronic filing system as a major milestone in modernising justice administration in Nigeria.

He assured the CJN that the NBA was ready to work with the Supreme Court to ensure effective implementation of the platform.

However, the NBA President raised concerns about some provisions of the new Practice Directions and requested that comprehensive user manuals and training materials be made available to guide lawyers.

He said such materials would enable the NBA leadership to properly sensitise and train members on the operation of the new electronic filing system.

Responding, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi, assured the delegation that the Practice Directions were carefully designed to facilitate legal practice before the court, not hinder it.

Akanbi said the electronic filing system contains safeguards to protect the interests of litigants and legal practitioners while improving the efficiency of the Supreme Court.

He disclosed that user manuals and training materials had already been prepared to assist lawyers in using the platform.

The Chief Registrar also asked the NBA to nominate representatives to work with Supreme Court officials during the implementation phase to ensure a smooth transition.

Justice Kekere-Ekun had unveiled the new electronic filing system last week, describing it as a groundbreaking innovation expected to transform legal practice and improve justice delivery in Nigeria.
