The National Open University of Nigeria has appointed Ramatu Ibrahim as Acting Bursar following the killing of the institution’s Bursar, Nasir Marafa, in Zamfara State.

The appointment was announced by the university’s Registrar, Oladipo Ajayi, in a public notice released on Tuesday evening.
Ibrahim’s appointment takes immediate effect and comes during the three-day mourning period declared by the university in honour of Marafa, which began on Monday and is expected to end on Wednesday.
The university said the decision was taken to ensure continuity and stability in its financial administration following the sudden death of the substantive Bursar.
According to Ajayi, the appointment was aimed at “ensuring continuity, stability and effective leadership in the university’s financial administration at a critical period.”
Before her elevation, Ibrahim served as Deputy Bursar, Treasury, where she was responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the university’s treasury operations.
NOUN described her as an experienced university administrator with extensive knowledge of the institution’s financial systems and operations.
The university said Ibrahim had served in several key units of the Bursary Department and had acquired experience in accounting, financial management, treasury operations and related administrative processes.
“In her immediate past role as Deputy Bursar, Treasury, Ibrahim provided professional leadership and oversight of the University’s treasury operations,” the university said.
It added that her experience across the Bursary Department, combined with her familiarity with NOUN’s financial systems and institutional processes, placed her in a strong position to provide leadership and sustain efficient, transparent and accountable financial services.
The university management expressed confidence that Ibrahim would discharge the responsibilities of the office with “professionalism, diligence, integrity and a strong sense of institutional responsibility.”
Her appointment was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Uduma Oji Uduma, with the concurrence of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Isa Yuguda.
The appointment follows the death of Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead in Zamfara State.
The university Registrar had announced Marafa’s death on Sunday, prompting the institution to declare three days of mourning.
NOUN described the late Bursar as “a dedicated and dependable officer who served the institution with commitment, professionalism and integrity.”
The university said Marafa made significant contributions to its financial administration and institutional development, adding that his service would be remembered “with gratitude and appreciation.”
Ibrahim will now oversee the university’s financial administration in an acting capacity as NOUN continues to mourn the loss of Marafa and works to maintain continuity in the management of its finances.
