The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has refuted claims that controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in prison for naira abuse, has been transferred from the Ikoyi custodial centre to the Kirikiri facility in Lagos State.

An NCoS official, who spoke to PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity, stated that Bobrisky is still being held at the Ikoyi prison. The official explained that the convict did not commit a capital offence that would warrant his transfer to a maximum prison, where inmates serving life and death sentences are typically kept.

Another NCoS official mentioned that while there are plans to move some inmates across custodial centres in the state for decongestion purposes, these plans are still in the proposal stage. The official added that such transfers may be considered for inmates with less than one year’s sentence, like Bobrisky, to create space for those awaiting trial. However, such individuals rarely go to maximum prison.

Calls and a text message to the spokesperson for the Lagos State Command of the NCS, Rotimi Oladokun, remained unanswered at the time of filing this report.

PUNCH Metro previously reported that Bobrisky shares a cell with male inmates and underwent an examination upon admission, which revealed no realignment of gender or genital organs. An official source disclosed that the convicted cross-dresser has been observing the rules and procedures of the facility.

Bobrisky was arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 3, 2024, for spraying new naira notes at a movie premiere in Lagos. He was convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on April 5, 2024, after pleading guilty to four counts of naira abuse. Before his conviction, Bobrisky asked for pardon, claiming he was unaware of the laws regarding naira abuse and vowed to educate his social media followers about the issue.
