The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced plans to establish anti-corruption committees in all its 130 branches across the country as part of a sweeping move to intensify the fight against corruption within the legal profession and the broader Nigerian society.

This was disclosed on Monday by Professor Babafemi Badejo, Chairman of the NBA National Anti-Corruption Committee, in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to Prof. Badejo, the decision followed a resolution passed at the recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the NBA held in Ilorin, Kwara State, mandating every NBA branch to set up an anti-corruption committee.

“Anti-corruption committees shall be established in all NBA branches to address corruption-related issues within their jurisdictions,” Prof. Badejo stated.

He noted that these branch-level committees will collaborate with local stakeholders, including the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organisations, to strengthen grassroots efforts against corruption. They will also liaise directly with the national anti-corruption body to ensure coordination and strategic alignment.

“The national-level body shall coordinate anti-corruption efforts across all branches,” he added.

Prof. Badejo highlighted that the move aligns with the vision of the current NBA President, Mr. Afam Osigwe, SAN, who earlier this year inaugurated the National Anti-Corruption Committee as part of his administration’s reform agenda.

“The NBA is boldly engaging in its expected role as the bastion of accountability and the rule of law,” Prof. Badejo declared. “Proactive NBA on anti-corruption is not just a professional necessity, but a national imperative.”

He said the NBA would encourage each branch to design targeted anti-corruption activities tailored to local realities, ensuring a comprehensive and context-specific approach.

“With the freedom of each branch and national coordination mechanism in articulating what can be done to curb corruption, the NBA will be delivering a clear message that corruption is not a normal way of life,” he said.

Prof. Badejo reaffirmed that the NBA’s anti-corruption push is integral to its mission to uphold the rule of law, adding, “The promotion of anti-corruption is the promotion of the rule of law — the guiding principle of the NBA.”
