The NBA-SPIDEL (Section on Public Interest and Development Law) section has announced call for its 2023 annual conference on Tuesday 3rd May, 2023 which is to be held from 20th – 23rd June, 2023 with the theme: “POST-ELECTION NIGERIA: THE JUDICIARY IN THE EYE OF THE STORM” It alongside unveil the conference logo as well as the conference venue, which accordingly, will be held in Ikeja-Lagos State.

According to Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani who is the Chairman of NBA-SPIDEL and Mr. Okey Leo Ohagba who chairs the Conference Planning Committee, the conference is targeted at lawyers, prospective conferees and the general public and would be held in Ikeja, the capital city of Lagos State.

The conference logo was unveiled, which is on displayed on the conference official website It was further stated in the memo that the logo “symbolizes the proverbial wheel of justice that grinds steadily to justice”. Also, and an official portal for the registration of the conference has been made available for participants to register.

All information pertaining to the conference, including registration/payment of fees can only be accessed and/or performed online via the portal. Also, there is no arrangement for offline payments. The e-payment interface on the conference registration portal is efficient and the NBA-SPIDEL assures all prospective conferees of a seamless conference registration/payment experience.

The conference which will also mark the end of the Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani – led NBA-SPIDEL COUNCIL; will birth a new Council after the Section’s scheduled Elections on the last day of the Conference, being 23rd June, 2023.

In clarifying the theme for the conference being “POST-ELECTION NIGERIA: THE JUDICIARY IN THE EYE OF THE STORM” the memo reads that “this is deliberate in the light of the present mood of our dear country, post National elections. As public interest advocates, ours is to constantly remind the judiciary of the daunting task ahead, need to do substantial justice and to help set the tone as watchdogs of justice delivery

In addition, the notice brags that it has lined up a list of activities which includes invitation of human rights crusaders as well as public interest advocated. The notice reads that:

We have lined up arrays of firebrand activists, renowned human rights crusaders, public interest advocates, rule of law defenders and other key players and stakeholders in the project NIGERIA at this conference as speakers and resource persons to deliver inspiring, thought-provoking, rewarding, educative and motivating session. Other networking activities and social events are also lined up for a truly refreshing conference experience. It promises to be one of the best in the annals of NBA Sections ‘Conferences”.

The conference fee has been subsidized and according to the notice which was released yesterday, the reason for the subsidization is … to encourage wider participation of lawyers of public interest affiliation and for a more enhanced public interest advocacy in Nigeria, we are happy to announce a hugely discounted Conference fees for this year’s Conference.”

This year’s conference registration fees represent a significant reduction (across all categories) from last year’s conference fees.

1-5 years post call lawyers are to pay 5,000 from 30th April to 30th May which signifies early bird registration as well as 10,000 for late registration which runs from 1st June to 19th June. Subsequently, 15,000 is made required for onsite registration while 5,000 for virtual registration and participation. Proceeding further, 6-10years post call lawyers are to pay 8,000 from 30th April to 30th May which signifies early bird registration as well as 13,000 for late registration which runs from 1st June to 19th June. Subsequently, 18,000 is made required for onsite registration while 5,000 for virtual registration and participation. For 11 to 19 years post call lawyers, 10,000 early bird registration, 25,000 late registration, 35,000 onsite registration as well as 5,000 virtual registration. For lawyers with 20 years and above post call: 18,000 for early bird, 35,000 for late registration and 50,000 for onsite registration. The customary 5,000 for virtual registration stands.

Consideration were made for Senior Advocates of Nigeria as well as HAGs and Benchers who are to pay 50, 000 for early bird registration, 80, 000 for late registration as well as 100,000 onsite registration and then, 10,000 for virtual registration. Consideration were also made for justices, judges and grand khadis who are to pay 18, 000 for early bird registration, 35, 000 for late registration as well as 40,000 onsite registration and then, 10,000 for virtual registration. For non-lawyers, they are mandated to pay 20, 000 for early birds registration, and 25,000 for late registration, 35, 000 for onsite registration as well as 15,000 for virtual participation.
