In a media chat last Tuesday, the NBA-SBL Chairman, Mr. Olumide Akpata, said the Section has conduded plans to establish SBL Clubs in 12 universities, evenly distributed amongst private, federal and state universities across the 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria. Akpata also pointed out that, his tenure would focus mainly on capacity building for Nigerian lawyers, and ensuring that specialisation is practically entrenched and deepened in Nigeria’s legal practice. He said a situation where most Nigerian lawyers, are involved in litigation and real estate should change. Legal practice in other jurisdictions have since moved beyond this, as there are quite a number of emerging areas in law that are yet to be fully tapped, he said. The SBL’s 18 committees are up and running, and two additional Committees on Agriculture and Solid Minerals, were inaugurated a few weeks ago, bringing the total of SBLCommittees to 20. The SBL Committees have since engaged in various workshops and training programmes for their mem-bers, to broaden their scopes and enhance their skills in related areas of practice. The Committee on Taxation, on October 26, had a successful workshop on ‘How Laws and Regulations Can Help in Insurance Penetration in Nigeria.’ The Aviation Committee yesterday held its workshop ‘Regulators and Airline Operators’ at the Westwood Hotel, Ilcoyi Lagos. The Construction Committee will hold its workshop in Port Harcourt, later this month. In the first quarter of next year, the Section will hold its SBL Young Lawyers Confer¬ence, specifically targeted at young lawyers who desire to build a career in business and commercial law practice. According to Akpata, the SBL is also set to launch its Business Law Quarterly Journal, in a few weeks. The journal he said will feature five well researched articles, case reviews and book reviews, and it will be published in print and e-formats. Also in the works, is the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, which is expected to commence various pro-grammes in commercial law in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal studies and it will be coordinated by Mr. Osaro Eghobamien, SAN. Plans by the SBL Council, are already in full gear to hold the 2018 Annual SBL Law Conference at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.]]>
