Former NBA Ikorodu Branch chair and Convener of the Duty Solicitors Network (DSN) Bayo Akinlade has met with the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Security Agencies Relations Committee (NBA-SARC) Chukwuka Ikwuazom SAN to establish a strategic partnership aimed at combating incidents of police brutality against lawyers.

The recent meeting was prompted by growing cases of harassment of counsels representing clients in police custody. Both parties extensively discussed forming an alliance between DSN and NBA-SARC to jointly ensure police uphold citizen’s rights.

Akinlade expressed excitement over collaborating with Ikwuazom on the intervention, noting they both chaired their respective NBA branches around 2018 and were eager to cooperate again on this new initiative targeting police misconduct.

The planned partnership between the lawyers’ groups seeks to institute measures protecting legal practitioners from violations while undertaking their lawful duties of providing legal aid. Stakeholders describe this as a crucial effort to reinforce rule of law and international human rights standards in policing.

With assurances of cooperation from the police hierarchy, the unions hope to significantly reduce cases of police excessiveness against lawyers which fundamentally threatens justice delivery, rights protection and constitutionalism.
