In a move to strengthen the NBA’s role in upholding professional ethics and discipline, the newly inaugurated President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, has announced the establishment of the LPDC Rules Watch Committee.

During his inaugural address, Osigwe emphasized the non-negotiable nature of maintaining the highest standards of ethics and professionalism within the legal profession. He pledged to ensure that NBA members adhere to the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners and that any breach of professional ethics would be met with appropriate disciplinary measures.

The LPDC Rules Watch Committee will be tasked with liaising with the Body of Benchers and the Chief Justice of Nigeria to advocate for the amendment of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee Rules, 2020. The primary objective is to fully restore the NBA’s role and powers in the investigation of complaints of professional misconduct against legal practitioners and the prosecution of matters before the LPDC.

The Committee will be chaired by Charles Ajuyah, SAN, with Chinedu Obienu serving as the Secretary.

Osigwe stressed the crucial importance of maintaining the integrity and credibility of the legal profession, noting that it is essential for legal practitioners to lead by example and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to justice. He emphasized that the NBA must play a central role in the disciplinary process to ensure that the highest standards of professional conduct are upheld.

By establishing the LPDC Rules Watch Committee, the NBA President reaffirms the Association’s dedication to self-regulation, accountability, and the promotion of a culture of ethics and professionalism within the legal community.
