The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, on Monday, May 19, 2025, received a high-level delegation from the National Democratic Institute (NDI) at the NBA House in Abuja for an advocacy and consultative meeting focused on strengthening electoral integrity.

The meeting, attended by NDI Program Director Ben Aga and officials from the Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), aimed to secure the NBA’s partnership in advancing a nationwide agenda for people-driven electoral reform. The initiative seeks to address widespread concerns around the credibility, transparency, and accountability of Nigeria’s electoral process.

Speaking during the visit, Aga praised the NBA’s recent leadership in defending democratic values and its strong public stance on national issues under Osigwe’s tenure.

“We are here because we have witnessed the NBA’s firm voice under your leadership, particularly in calling out undemocratic policies. We believe the NBA is a natural ally in the national push for credible elections,” Aga said.

Femi John, Head of Programs at KDI, reinforced the need for structural changes to Nigeria’s electoral landscape. Citing a survey of over 5,000 young Nigerians, he noted growing disillusionment with electoral outcomes and institutions.

“There is an urgent need to unbundle the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), establish an Electoral Offenses Commission, and ensure that all election petitions are resolved before officials assume office. These steps are crucial for electoral credibility,” John said.

He called on the NBA to lead the legal and institutional conversation around accountability and prosecution of electoral offenses. John also extended an invitation to the NBA President to serve as keynote speaker at the forthcoming National Dialogue on Electoral Reform, organized by NDI and its partners.

In his response, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, welcomed the collaboration and affirmed the Bar’s unwavering commitment to strengthening democracy, advancing electoral justice, and holding power accountable.

“The truth is, changing laws alone won’t fix our electoral problems. We must reform the minds of political actors and the institutions that enable impunity. Justice must not be lost in technicalities,” Osigwe stated.

Drawing from his recent experience as part of Yiaga Africa’s Election Study Mission to Ghana, Osigwe highlighted the comparative transparency of Ghana’s vote collation process and the trust it has earned among citizens—contrasting it with Nigeria’s inconsistent procedures and public distrust.

He stressed the need to restore public faith in electoral institutions and committed the NBA to being a proactive stakeholder in driving meaningful reform.

“The NBA is committed to working with NDI and its partners to ensure electoral justice, prosecute offenders, and make democracy work for the Nigerian people. Justice is not just a legal ideal—it is the foundation of national stability,” he said.
