The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Owerri Branch has strongly condemned the alleged assault, humiliation and torture of its member, Barrister Chigozie Chinaka, by the Area Commander of Owerri Municipal Police, ACP David Ogenyi.

In a resolution on Saturday, the Bar described the reported actions against its member as “despicable and barbaric”. Chinaka was allegedly subjected to severe abuse on September 25th and 26th while undertaking legal services.

The NBA Owerri Branch called for the immediate suspension of ACP Ogenyi to enable impartial investigations into the grave allegations against him and his officers.

A 3-man committee was constituted to petition the police hierarchy, Police Service Commission, Attorney-General and file fundamental rights suits to demand redress and justice for the victimized lawyer.

Owerri NBA reiterated its commitment to promoting rule of law and vowed to ensure the perpetrators of the alleged unlawful detention, assault and torture of its member face legal consequences.

The resolution signals the branch’s outrage and resolve to defend its members against harassment by security agents. It highlights the need to check abuse of power and impunity within law enforcement.
