The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Kano Branch is embroiled in controversy as the embattled Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) Secretary, Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim, Esq., has been cleared to contest the branch’s chairmanship in the upcoming elections, According to Kubwaexpress.com report.

Huwaila’s clearance, along with two other candidates, Usman Umar Fari and Ahmad Sani Bawa, has raised eyebrows within the legal community, with many questioning the impartiality of the process.

The development comes as Ibrahim was recently appointed as the Chairman of the NBA Kano Law Week Planning Committee. Huwaila also doubles as the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) Secretary, a role seen by some as an opportunity for her to showcase organizational leadership skills that could potentially bolster her campaign.

However, a group of lawyers from the NBA Kano Branch has taken legal action, filing a motion at the Federal High Court seeking to halt the implementation of certain guidelines for the upcoming branch elections. The motion, with SUIT NO: FHC/KN/CS/145/2024, was filed by Ahmad Sani Bawa, Gidado Aliyu Gidado, and others.

The motion requests the court to grant an interlocutory injunction restraining the NBA leadership and electoral committee from disqualifying lawyers who have paid their current bar practicing fees and have ten years post-call standing from contesting elections.

The situation has sparked debates within the legal fraternity, with some lawyers questioning whether Huwaila’s dual roles as the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) Secretary and a chairmanship candidate compromise the integrity of the electoral process. Concerns have been raised about potential conflicts of interest and the fairness of the guidelines in NBA General election, which many lawyers view as if she may have divided attention and may be used in NBA national election.

As the legal battle unfolds, the NBA Kano Branch finds itself at a crossroads, with members divided over the decisions of the Electoral Committee and the legitimacy of the upcoming elections. The outcome of the court case and the resolution of the controversies surrounding the electoral process will have significant implications for the leadership of the branch and the reputation of the legal profession in Kano.
