The Inspector General of Police is facing mounting pressure to resign following disturbing reports of children being subjected to inhumane conditions while in police custody.

The children, who were allegedly detained for participating in the “End Bad Governance” protest three months ago, are said to be suffering from malnutrition, sickness, and a lack of proper care.
Usman Umar Fari, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Kano Branch, has led the calls for the Inspector General’s immediate resignation. In a strongly worded statement, Fari accused the police chief of failing to ensure the safety and well-being of the detained children, stating that his continued tenure would only serve to damage Nigeria’s international reputation and undermine President Bola Tinubu’s democratic credentials.
According to accounts from the children’s guardians, the young detainees have been denied sufficient food, clean drinking water, and proper medical attention. These conditions constitute a clear violation of the children’s fundamental rights, as enshrined in article 16(1) of the African Charter for Human and Peoples’ Right and other international covenants ratified by Nigeria.
Fari urged President Tinubu to take swift action, calling for the Inspector General’s immediate dismissal if he refuses to step down voluntarily. “The police boss has failed Nigerians, Africans, and all human beings of conscience,” Fari stated, emphasizing the need for the president to demonstrate his commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, particularly vulnerable children.
The Nigerian Bar Association has also called for thorough investigations by the National Human Right Commission and the National Assembly into the circumstances surrounding the children’s detention and treatment. The incident has sparked national outrage and raised serious questions about the police force’s respect for human rights and the rule of law.
