Amid a N10 million bribery allegation that has cast a shadow over the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kano, the Kano State Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is urging the Tribunal to unveil the identities of the lawyers implicated in the incident.

Reports indicate that Justice Flora Azinge, the presiding judge of the Tribunal, expressed concern and accused certain lawyers of attempting to bribe the tribunal to compromise its integrity.

In response to these claims, Bar. Sagir Suleiman Gezawa, the NBA Chairman, shared his thoughts on the matter during a phone interview with Vanguard on Thursday. Gezawa stressed that the Tribunal would garner respect from the legal community if it disclosed the identities of the lawyers involved, along with any supporting evidence or facts pertaining to the allegation.

Bar. Gezawa mentioned that the chapter has already communicated its stance to the tribunal by way of a formal letter, requesting an opportunity to discuss this matter further.

He elaborated, “The allegation is what it is. Her Ladyship made the assertion in open court that lawyers were attempting to undermine the system by offering bribes to members of her panel. Furthermore, she mentioned that there were rumors of a tribunal staff member receiving the sum of N10 million. At this point, it remains an allegation. If there is substantial evidence or proof against any lawyer, there are various avenues, processes, and mechanisms in place to hold lawyers accountable. Internally, we have the Legal Practitioner Disciplinary Committee; if a petition is filed, we will address it.”

“Additionally, lawyers are not immune to prosecution. If there is evidence, complaints can be lodged with Anti-Corruption agencies such as the EFCC, ICPC, or the police. Rest assured, the NBA will support the proper legal channels,” Gezawa added.

He concluded by emphasizing that “My Lady” would demonstrate great honor if she chose to reveal the identities of the involved parties, along with any supporting evidence or facts.

Meanwhile, the Kano State government has commended Justice Flora Azinge for sounding the alarm, viewing her actions as a positive testament to the integrity still present within the Nigerian judiciary. The State’s Commissioner of Information, Halilu Baba Dantiye, released a statement to the press in which he urged anti-corruption agencies to initiate investigations, given that this serious allegation was made openly by a respected Judge.
