The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has confirmed receiving no fewer than 20 petitions against legal practitioners over alleged professional misconduct between November 2023 and November 2024.

Some of the cases involve lawyers implicated in the contentious Kano State Emirate tussle, a matter that has drawn widespread attention.

The petitions partly stem from the legal battles surrounding the deposition of Emir Ado Bayero and the attempted reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Yusuf.

In May 2024, Justice Abdullahi Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano nullified Governor Yusuf’s action and restrained him from enforcing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law of 2019. The law had been passed to pave the way for Sanusi’s reinstatement.

However, lawyers, including the NBA, highlighted that chieftaincy matters fall under the jurisdiction of state high courts, not federal courts, raising questions about the appropriateness of the lawyers’ actions in filing the case at the Federal High Court.

NBA Publicity Secretary, Bridget Edokwe, disclosed to The PUNCH on Saturday that some lawyers involved in the case knowingly filed applications before a court lacking jurisdiction.

“The lawyers erred by proceeding to file an application in the Federal High Court on a matter it has no jurisdiction over,” she stated.

She added that these actions were among several allegations, including infamous conduct, dishonorable behavior, and abuse of court processes.

The NBA revealed that other petitions also accused lawyers of:
– Filing conflicting suits or orders in various courts.
– Misconduct related to a May 28, 2024, order by Justice Amina Aliyu of the Kano State High Court.
– Involvement in unethical practices in unrelated cases.

While most of the cases have been referred to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) for investigation, the NBA has not disclosed the specific punishments for those found culpable.

“Many of these cases are already before the LPDC,” Edokwe noted. “The complaints include infamous conduct and behavior unbecoming of a legal practitioner.”
