The Nigerian Bar Association in partnership with MacArthur Foundation held a legislative advocacy and sensitisation workshop in Jalingo, yesterday 9/3/2020 on promoting the domestication of the Administration of criminal justice legislation in the State.

The workshop had in attendance dignitaries which included the President of the Nigerian Bar Association who was represented by Habeeb Lawal, the Assistant Publicity Secretary of the NBA and the Chief Judge of Taraba State, Hon. Justice Fibilus Andetur.

In his goodwill message, the NBA President noted that the passing into law of the Administration of criminal justice law will restore confidence in the criminal justice system. Also, the Chief Judge of the State noted that there are difficulties in the application of the penal code and the criminal procedure law and that the Administration of criminal justice law will bring some needed ease to procedural issues in criminal proceedings.

The NBA Project Team’s coordinator Victor Abasiakan-Ekim gave an overview of the objectives of the workshop. And the keynote presenter-led an engaging discourse on an overview of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 in the administration of justice in Nigeria.

All the participants at the workshop were buoyed when the Permanent Secretary of the Taraba State Ministry of Justice announced that the Taraba State Administration of criminal justice bill has passed the first reading at the House of Assembly. The NBA Team committed to giving the necessary technical assistance as the State House of Assembly goes about the process of enacting the law.

The NBA President before the end of the workshop inaugurated the Taraba State Implementation Committee headed by the Chairman of NBA Jalingo Branch, Ikechukwu Osuji. The other members of the committee are drawn from the Nigerian Police, Correctional Services and Ministry of Justice.
