The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch, Seyi Olawumi Esq., took a stand against an unjust penalty imposed by a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official yesterday.

The incident occurred along Obafemi Awolowo way into Agidingbi road, as Mr. Olawumi was en route to the burial of former NBA Ikeja Chairman, Adesina Ogunlana.

Mr. Olawumi noticed a LASTMA officer attempting to unfairly penalize a motorist who had been caught on a yellow line during traffic. The chairman observed that the official was allowing other commercial drivers to pass without consequence, raising concerns about selective enforcement.

Accompanied by fellow NBA Ikeja members, Mr. Olawumi approached the situation with a calm but firm demeanor. He questioned the fairness of the official’s actions, engaging in a brief exchange with the LASTMA officer. Initially resistant, the officer eventually reconsidered his stance and decided to let the motorist go without penalty.

The motorist, visibly relieved by the intervention, expressed sincere gratitude to the chairman and the lawyers for their unwavering support and willingness to stand up for justice when it mattered most.

This incident highlights the importance of fair and equal treatment under the law, and the crucial role that legal professionals play in upholding these principles. Mr. Olawumi’s actions serve as a reminder that those in positions of authority have a responsibility to exercise their power judiciously and without bias.
